But its been put into motion by politicians sitting comfortably behind closed doors, in nice comfortable office chairs pushing divisions and plans that start with words like "Operation Iraqi Freedom" and filter down to some young kids on the battlefield, coming from places that sometimes don't have any opportunities, sometimes from a real belief that they are there to do good even though they are told so by their government, sometimes just to see the world, sometimes to earn citizenship, sometimes because they have no direction, sometimes just to see someone die.
Actions shown in this video is a basic reaction to being put into a environment where your friend died yesterday in an IED explosion, you watched a whole humvee torn apart, its engine block landing 50 yards from the wreck, pieces of your troop lying around like debris of blood red confetti, being shot at day by day by an enemy you never see. Command never being able to give you proper operable intelligence. Your training meaning little because basic covers fighting a uniformed aggressor not asymmetrically warfare against a guerrilla force in urban combat environs. Frustrated that what you are doing day by day means little, your people die and it gets worse and not better. Wondering if all the lives lost are essentially wasted on a mission that was idiotic to begin with.
This is why I find it hard to hold the troops accountable. Because it's not their fault they are there, its not their fault that they are not trained as a UN peace keeping force, a police force, a counter insurgency force. Its not their fault they were never given or taught proper cultural sensitivity training.
It's the fault of the people in power, not just the president, but the Generals, the Joint Chiefs, The Pentagon, and essentially the whole intelligentsia of America that simply let this catastrophe happen. There hundreds of thousands of educated professional Americans that willingly kept silent. Unable to criticize their own governments action. Its the fault of all who pushed this war through the most basic emotion humanity has. Fear.
What is really sad it that it's not the first time and it wouldn't be the last I believe.
No soldier or marine is worthy of support unless he/she is actually defending you from something.
When you meet an afghani or iraqi who is attacking the US and its allies you be sure to let me know.

The war is not illegal and every reason that has been given to call it so has been proven false. Absence of WMDs does not equal illegal war. The war was launched with congressional approval. Iraq had lost it's sovereignty years ago after commiting genocide. The Iraqi government harbored known terrorists and provided diplomatic passports. The list goes on. War is a terrible thing no matter what the reasons. However, this war is not illegal or without merit. The soldiers in this clip are the exception, not the rule.

(It would seem hard to believe that this was an IED as the soldiers are whooping it up directly after the blast. These guys are scumbags and deserve to be dishonorably discharged, just like Mr. Puppy Flinger. This certainly doesn't reflect well on the hundreds of troops that are over there, doing their jobs honorably (even though the ultimate reason they're there is a BS) and more miserable then you and me on our worst day, combined. I do hope swift and heavy action is taken soon against these assholes who found humor in this. Poor dog.)

You can hear one soldier surprised saying "its a dog" after it wanders in. Another says "just blow it. dont wait for the dog to get out of the way."
After checking around a bit and seeing the vehicles involved, this is the result of an EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) controlled detonation...
Thanks for doing the research. Also, after watching the clip a few times, it looks like there's a bit of optical illusion going on here due the depth of field. When the explosion goes off, you can clearly see the dog start running away. In other words, at first it looks like the dog is right on top of the explosion but actually the dog was several feet away. Whether the dog was injured or not you can't tell from the vid, but it clearly wasn't immediately blown up as I think a lot of people are assuming. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's the dog running past the bottom of the screen at 0:24.

EOD had already prepped the blast as evidenced by the evacuated area and lack of anyone interfering with the blast site. If you go to the liveleak version which has a few more seconds in advance of this one, you can hear soldiers commenting on the dog wandering into the blast zone. They can't make the dog get out, and no one is going to walk in there. So, do we halt the convey and continue to place human life at risk until the dog gets bored sniffing around the blast site, or blow it and move on? I've ridden with EOD before and they do not mess around or waste time when destroying roadside explosives no matter what random animal wanders into the blast site. Also, you'll notice that the people are kept away. Detonations are announced and areas are cleared to avoid injuring any civilians.

Was this blowing the weapons in place? I'm just wondering, I was under the impression that they do not do that any more, especially with non combatants in the area.
I'm not 100% familiar with how they're currently handeling it, but that's the way it was done when I was there. IED's were normally detonated on the spot after the area was cleared. There is always the possibility of a trigger man watching the area, so I don't remember IED's ever being moved from their location. I had a bunch of videos of EOD detonations shot throughout the deployment. People regularly film this stuff from HMMWVs further back in convoys. Unfortunately that hard drive is destroyed and I lost a lot of pictures and clips. Some Iraqis would actually stand as close as possible because they wanted to watch the explosions. I remember one video where they did have to delay the detonation because people kept getting too close to the area and had to be moved back. Usually EOD would call out a warning and a countdown from a loudspeaker before actually detonating though... didn't hear that in this one.
but no they give you a stick and say poke this around until you hear a metal sound. *-Sarcasm
I thought the days of clearing a mine field with a knife were over!
